Flooding Conference: Resilience, Management and Response
23 February 2021, 9:30 am - 4:00 pm
Incidences of flooding are on the rise. Currently, 2.4 million UK properties are at risk from river and coastal flooding each year. A further 2.8 million are susceptible to surface water flooding. Both local authorities and residents are on high alert for the next major rainfall incident, which poses a risk to lives and livelihoods.
Whilst the response from local authorities, the environment agency and emergency services is well rehearsed, it is necessary to prevent these major incidents from occurring in the first instance. Not just to counter the human impact of flooding, but the economic one.
Over £200 billion worth of assets are at risk of flooding around rivers and coasts in British towns and cities. According to the Environment Agency, the global temperature could rise up to 4 degrees C by 2100, requiring a budget of £1bn per year for flood management.
The 25 Year Environment Plan gives a long-term vision for natural flood resilience. The Government’s National Flood Resilience Review focuses on extreme flood scenarios and improving the resilience of local infrastructure. The increasing occurrence of flooding in recent years, across the North in particular, has placed an urgency on the Government to act to protect vulnerable communities and to step up their response to flooding. The major flooding of this past winter has only highlighted this urgent need for investment even further.
This conference will give you an overview of the latest government legislation and funding for flood management in the UK. Case studies on innovative solutions for flood prevention and management will be from a wide range of rural and urban settings.
