Piperdam Hopes New Brand Will Boost ProfitsNeil Hardie
A rise in bookings and the construction of new lodges has seen turnover at Piperdam Golf and Leisure resort increase by more than 16%.
The 650 acre site in Angus, which was bought by Coppergreen Developments in 2016 for £25 million, saw turnover rise from £5.8m in 2017, to £6.8m for the year ending December 31 2018.
Pre-tax profits saw a 38% increase from more than £1m in 2017 to £1.4m last year.
Director Sharon Wall highlighted the construction of 14 new lodges on the site, as well as the increasing popularity of the venue’s activity centre, constructed in 2017, which increased turnover by 50%.
The site also hosted a number of concerts and large sporting events during the year.
She said: “The number of activities held on the site also increased during the year with the introduction of Segways that have proved to be the most successful activity offered.
“Refurbishment of the older stock of lodges continued in 2018 which increased the cost of repair and maintenance costs.”
In the second half of 2018, the facility became the first Scottish holiday park to enter into the Landal brand of Hoseasons.
The brand, whose criteria for entry is high quality accommodation combined with activities and catering facilities, targets families with younger children.
The name is already familiar to holidaymakers in Europe and the company hopes to attract more customers from the continent as a result.
The firm saw an increase in staff numbers, from 142 in 2017, to 160 last year, with six employed in administration and 154 working in operations.
Salary costs rose 11% to £1.9m.
The facility saw lodge occupancy run at 80% for the full year, a drop of 5% from 2017.
Ms Wall added: “The fall in occupancy in the year was influenced by reduced lead times to book newly constructed lodges, however the average nightly tariff increased to £177.”
The award-winning facility is a popular wedding venue and has two golf courses, a restaurant, pool and spa.
